CNC machine daily maintenance checklist
A CNC machine maintenance checklist for the daily check is the operator's start-of-shift look at what a CNC needs to run without damage: coolant level and condition, way lube topped up, air pressure in range, chips cleared, then the door interlock and emergency stop tested and the check signed. This template has 7 questions, one record per machine ID.
It belongs to the operator as part of autonomous maintenance, with deeper preventive maintenance on the schedule the machine builder sets. Each question links to a familiar failure: an empty way lube tank that scores the slideways, coolant gone rancid or too lean that marks parts and irritates skin, chips packed around the conveyor until it jams, low air pressure that stops the tool changer mid-cycle, or a door interlock bypassed with a magnet so the spindle runs with the door open. A short check at the start of the shift costs less than any of those.
What it is for, as built: Daily operator check of CNC machines.

The 7 questions in the inspection
Every question is answered Yes, No or N/A. Each No is flagged and asks for a photo and a comment, so the finding arrives with its evidence.
Machine
- 1Coolant level and condition are good
- 2Way lube is topped up
- 3Air pressure is in range
- 4Chips are cleared
Safety
- 5Door interlock works
- 6Emergency stop works
- 7Check signed

A filled-in example
One section as it might be filled in on the floor, with every other section of the inspection answered Yes. The place and finding are made up to show how the inspection reads and scores.
Result: fail, 85.7% against a pass mark of 90
- 7 questions, all of them count.
- 1 answered No, so 6 of 7 are Yes: 6 ÷ 7 = 85.7%.
- 85.7% is under 90, so the inspection fails.
What happened next: Operator topped up and logged it. Maintenance checked the lube pump and lines for a leak before the night shift.
Scored here as one point per question with N/A left out. In the app each answer carries the points set on the template, so change them after you clone it if your plant weighs some checks more.
CNC Machine Daily Check
Inspection, daily
- Machine ID
- CNC-12, Line 2
Machine
- Coolant level and condition are goodYes
- Way lube is topped upNo
Comment: Way lube tank below the low mark and a low-lube warning on the controller. Topped up before starting the first part.
Photo attached to the No
- Air pressure is in rangeYes
- Chips are clearedYes
When to use it
- Every day, before first use or at the start of the shift.
- The person responsible for the area or equipment answers each question on the spot.
- Each record starts with: Machine ID.
How it is scored
The template is built with points per answer and a pass mark of 90. In this library every audit is set to pass at 80 and every inspection at 90. Each submitted inspection shows its score and pass or fail, and every No is flagged with its photo and comment.

FAQ
CNC machine daily maintenance checklist: common questions
Once per shift, at the start, per machine is the built interval. Do it again after a tool crash, a coolant change or a new coolant mix, after the machine has sat idle over a weekend, after any work on the interlocks or the stop circuit, and when a new operator takes the machine. On a two-shift cell each operator checks at their own start.
The operator does it as part of autonomous maintenance, so they need to know the right coolant concentration and how to test it, where the way lube tank and air pressure gauge are, and how to test the interlock and emergency stop safely. A No on either safety item goes to the supervisor and the maintenance lead before the machine runs.
A fail means the machine should not cut yet: dry slideways, bad coolant, low air, packed chips, or a safety device that did not trip. Fix the lube, coolant and chips before the first part. A failed interlock or emergency stop means the machine stays off, tagged, until maintenance has tested it. In this template every No is flagged and asks for a photo and a comment, and an inspection that scores under its pass mark of 90 is a fail.
Keep the machine ID, date, shift, operator, coolant reading, the air pressure seen and each No with what was done. Add a photo where it helps. Weeks of records show which machine drinks way lube, which coolant sump turns early, and when the interlock was last proven, which matters after any incident. In LeanSuite each submitted inspection is stored with its score, its pass or fail, and the photo and comment on every No.
7 questions in 2 sections: machine and safety. Every question is answered Yes, No or N/A.
