When to use it

When to use the SQCDP Tier Board

  • For a tier 1 huddle at the start of every shift, standing in front of the board for ten minutes.
  • When a line has a paper board and the numbers on it are a shift old.
  • To give a tier 2 or tier 3 meeting the same picture as the line, without re-copying it.
  • When reds are discussed but not turned into actions with owners.

Running it

How to run an SQCDP Tier Board session

  1. 1
    Fix the rules before the first huddle: what makes each pillar red today, written on the board. Any recordable for Safety, a customer complaint or scrap over the limit for Quality, a missed shipment for Delivery.
  2. 2
    Same time, same place, every shift, standing, 10 to 15 minutes. The team leader runs it, the team attends, the supervisor listens.
  3. 3
    Colour yesterday's day on each wheel first, then read the scorecard: which KPIs are off target this week.
  4. 4
    For each red, ask what happened and what we do today. If the team can fix it, it becomes an action sticky with a name and a date. If not, it is escalated to tier 2.

    Review yesterday's actions before adding today's. Closed ones come off; late ones get a decision.

    Read the month, not just the day: three reds on Delivery in two weeks is a pattern that deserves a 3C row or an A3, not three separate actions.

    Good output: every red day has an action or an escalation against it, the huddle finishes in 15 minutes, and the wheels show the month's shape at a glance.

Worked example

The sample board shows fourteen days on each of the five pillar wheels. Safety is green every day except day 11, a recordable that the huddle escalated to tier 2 the same morning with an investigation owner. Quality went red on day 3 and amber on day 8. Cost was amber on day 5 and red on day 13. Delivery is where the pattern is: red on days 2 and 3, then again on day 10, three missed shipments in two weeks. People is green throughout. Read day by day, each Delivery red had its own explanation and its own action. Read as a month on the wheel, three reds in ten days looked like one cause, so the team leader created a tag from the Delivery widget for the third miss, opened a 3C row for late Monday pick lists and asked planning to the next huddle.

Common mistakes

  • Colouring by feel. If the rule for red is not written down, the board is green when the mood is good.
  • A huddle that solves problems. Fifteen minutes is for seeing, deciding and assigning; the solving happens after.
  • Reds with no action and no escalation. The board then records failure without doing anything about it.
  • Numbers copied from a report a shift late. Enter the day's value at the board.
  • Only the leader talks. Each pillar can have an operator owner who reports it.
  • Never reading the month. The wheel's job is the pattern.
