Forklift and pedestrian safety poster

Wherever forklifts and people share a floor, both have rules to keep. This poster sets them side by side: pedestrians use the marked walkways, make eye contact before crossing and never walk under raised forks; drivers check the truck every shift, keep to the speed limit, slow down and sound the horn at cross aisles and blind corners, and park with the forks down. The driver rules follow the OSHA powered industrial truck standard.

The words on the poster

Forklifts and people

Same floor, two sets of rules. Both keep everyone safe.

On foot

  • Use the marked walkways and crossings.
  • Make eye contact with the driver before you cross.
  • Never walk or stand under raised forks.
  • Keep clear of a truck's path and its swing.
  • Never ride on a forklift.
  • Wear hi-vis where the site requires it.

Driving

  • Check the truck before each shift.
  • Keep to the site speed limit.
  • Slow down and sound the horn at cross aisles and blind corners.
  • Load blocks your view? Travel with it trailing.
  • On ramps over 10%, load upgrade.
  • Leaving it: forks down, controls neutral, power off, brake on.
  • No eye contact, no crossing. Drivers stop for people on foot. People on foot wait to be seen.

Driver rules follow OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178.

How to use it

Putting the Forklift and pedestrian safety poster to work

  1. 1

Post it at walkway crossings, dock doors and the forklift charging area.

  2. 2

Use it in induction for everyone, not only drivers: most people at risk are on foot.

  3. 3

Walk the routes with it and mark where walkways and truck aisles cross without a crossing.

  4. 4

Pair it with the forklift inspection checklist for the pre-shift check.

Which size to print

  • 24 x 36 in or A2: a main wall or team board, read from a few metres away.
  • 18 x 24 in or A3: a station or notice board. The A3 file also fits 11 x 17 in paper.
  • Letter or A4: a clipboard, binder or handout, on any office printer.

Every PDF is vector, so it stays sharp at full size. Nothing runs to the edge of the page, so no bleed is needed.

A poster reminds. A routine makes it stick.
