Job safety analysis (JSA) steps poster

A job safety analysis (JSA), also called a job hazard analysis (JHA), breaks a job into its steps, finds the hazards in each step and sets a control for each hazard before anyone is hurt. This poster sets out six steps based on OSHA's guide to job hazard analysis: pick the job, break it into steps, find the hazards, set the controls using the hierarchy of controls, write it down and train, and review it whenever the job changes.

How to use it

Putting the Job safety analysis (JSA) steps poster to work

  1. 1

Post it where JSAs are written and reviewed: the safety office, the maintenance shop, the team area.

  2. 2

Use it to train the people who do the job to write the JSA with you, not to sign one someone else wrote.

  3. 3

Start with the jobs with the most injuries and near misses, and with new or changed jobs.

  4. 4

Pair it with the free JSA template and the hierarchy of controls poster.

Which size to print

  • 24 x 36 in or A2: a main wall or team board, read from a few metres away.
  • 18 x 24 in or A3: a station or notice board. The A3 file also fits 11 x 17 in paper.
  • Letter or A4: a clipboard, binder or handout, on any office printer.

Every PDF is vector, so it stays sharp at full size. Nothing runs to the edge of the page, so no bleed is needed.

A poster reminds. A routine makes it stick.
