Safety cross calendar poster

A safety cross is a calendar in the shape of a cross, with one square for each day of the month. Each day the team colors its square by the most serious safety event of that day and talks about every square that isn't green at the huddle, so the month's record shows at a glance. This poster is the cross itself at wall size, with an example color key (green, blue for a near miss, yellow for first aid, red for an injury beyond first aid, white for a day not worked) and boxes for the month and days since the last red day.

  2. 2

Agree the color key with your safety lead and keep it the same all year.

  3. 3

  4. 4

Use the free safety cross template for the month totals and the year log.

Which size to print

  • 24 x 36 in or A2: a main wall or team board, read from a few metres away.
  • 18 x 24 in or A3: a station or notice board. The A3 file also fits 11 x 17 in paper.
  • Letter or A4: a clipboard, binder or handout, on any office printer.

Every PDF is vector, so it stays sharp at full size. Nothing runs to the edge of the page, so no bleed is needed.

Sources and notes

A month of green with no near misses reported can mean people have stopped reporting, not that the area is safe. Count the blue squares too: near miss reports are a leading indicator.
