Standard work, SOPs and training

It comes down to scope and audience. Standard work defines the current best timed method at a specific workstation. An SOP defines the required, approved process for a broader activity. A work instruction is the detailed, visual, step-by-step reference an operator follows in the moment.

Takt time, work sequence and standard in-process stock. Each is calculated with a defined formula rather than estimated, and each depends on the one before it: takt time first, then the work sequence built to that pace, then standard in-process stock sized to support both.

A one point lesson (OPL), also called a single point lesson, is a short visual training document, usually one page, that teaches how to do one specific action or task using a few words and pictures. OPLs work for both formal and on-the-job training and are a quick way to close a knowledge gap.

Prepare the worker, present the operation, try out performance and follow up. The trainer uses the job breakdown sheet as the reference, and skipping a step is the most common reason operators trained this way still work inconsistently.
