Job instruction 4 steps poster

Job instruction is the method from the Training Within Industry programme for teaching someone a job so they do it correctly, safely and conscientiously. The trainer first gets ready (a timetable, the job broken down, everything to hand, the workplace set up), then follows four steps: prepare the worker, present the operation one important step at a time, try out the worker's performance, and follow up. This poster sets out the method as TWI wrote it, in plain words.

The words on the poster

Job instruction: 4 steps

Teach the job so it is done right, safely and the same way, from the first day.

Get ready first

  • A training timetable
  • The job broken down
  • Everything ready
  • The workplace set up
  • Prepare the worker Put them at ease. Name the job, find out what they know, place them where they can see.
  • Present the operation Tell, show and illustrate one important step at a time. Stress each key point.
  • Try out performance They do it while you watch and correct, then again, explaining each key point.
  • Follow up Let them work. Say who to ask. Check often, then less often.
  • If the worker hasn't learned, the instructor hasn't taught.

  4. 4

Pair it with the free TWI job breakdown sheet and on-the-job training checklist.

Which size to print

  • 24 x 36 in or A2: a main wall or team board, read from a few metres away.
  • 18 x 24 in or A3: a station or notice board. The A3 file also fits 11 x 17 in paper.
  • Letter or A4: a clipboard, binder or handout, on any office printer.

Every PDF is vector, so it stays sharp at full size. Nothing runs to the edge of the page, so no bleed is needed.
