One-point lesson poster

A one-point lesson (OPL) teaches one skill, check or fact on a single page, mostly picture, in a few minutes at the place where it is used. A good OPL says what to do, how to do it and why it matters, shows good next to bad, and records who wrote it and who has been taught. OPLs come in three kinds: basic knowledge, an improvement someone found, and a problem case to learn from. This poster shows the six parts and the three kinds.

The words on the poster

One-point lesson

One topic, one page, taught at the machine in a few minutes.

What goes on it

  • One topic One skill, check or fact. Not a manual.
  • Picture first Most of the page is a photo or drawing.
  • What, how, why What to do, how, and why it matters.
  • Good and bad Side by side, when you can show both.
  • Author and date Who wrote it, and when it was checked.
  • Signed off Each person signs once they can do it.

Three kinds

  • Basic knowledge How it works, or what normal looks like.
  • Improvement A better way someone found.
  • Problem case What went wrong, and how to spot it.

How to use it

Putting the One-point lesson poster to work

  1. 1

Put it where OPLs are written and posted, so they all follow one layout.

  2. 2

Use it to coach someone through their first OPL in a short session.

  3. 3

Ask after each fixed problem: should this become a problem-case OPL?

  4. 4

Pair it with the free one-point lesson template and training sign-off sheet.

Which size to print

  • 24 x 36 in or A2: a main wall or team board, read from a few metres away.
  • 18 x 24 in or A3: a station or notice board. The A3 file also fits 11 x 17 in paper.
  • Letter or A4: a clipboard, binder or handout, on any office printer.

Every PDF is vector, so it stays sharp at full size. Nothing runs to the edge of the page, so no bleed is needed.

A poster reminds. A routine makes it stick.
