Buyer's guide

Best lockout/tagout (LOTO) software

The best LOTO software depends on where lockouts already live. CONFORMiT ties them to permit to work and CMMS work orders. Evotix and Intelex put LOTO inside an EHS suite. Master Lock pairs software with its padlocks. LeanSuite fits plants that want each procedure to open only for a certified person, in their lean system.

In more detail: Lockout/tagout software replaces the LOTO binder: it keeps one approved, machine-specific energy control procedure per piece of equipment, guides the authorized employee through each isolation step on a phone or tablet, records proof, and shows which machines are locked out right now. CONFORMiT is the most complete dedicated tool on this list, with approval workflows, an offline app, real-time isolation tracking and links to CMMS work orders and permit to work. Evotix runs asset-based LOTO from a QR code inside an EHS suite, and Intelex added governed LOTO procedure authoring and approval to its EHSQ suite in October 2026. Master Lock sells eLOTO for writing procedures and cLOTO for recording each lock applied, alongside its hardware. LeanSuite runs LOTO as a photo-verified Lean Creator form that opens only for someone with a valid Authorized Employee certification in the Skills Matrix, with a live floor map of active lockouts. It does not work offline.

Based on each vendor's public website, reviewed October 2026; tell us if something has changed at info@theleansuite.com.

How we chose these tools

Lockout/tagout (LOTO) is how a plant isolates a machine's energy sources and keeps them off while someone services it; in the US, OSHA's control of hazardous energy standard, 29 CFR 1910.147, requires documented energy control procedures, with a narrow exception (paragraph (c)(4)), and a periodic inspection of each procedure at least once a year (paragraph (c)(6)). LOTO software holds those procedures, runs them at the machine and keeps the record. Each product on this list meets all of these:

  • LOTO is named

The vendor's own pages name lockout/tagout as a product or module, not only a blog post about the standard.

  • Used in manufacturing

Manufacturing or industrial plants are a market the vendor names.

  • Still sold in 2026

A live product page with a way to buy, ask for pricing or book a demo.

  • Readable public information

Enough on the vendor's own pages, read on 31 October 2026, to describe how a procedure is written and run. Brady LINK360 and Rockwell Automation ScanESC also sell LOTO software, but their sites did not let us read their product pages that day, so they are not described here.

Worked example

One plant, 120 procedures, one lockout on Press 4

An illustrative plant, not a customer: 120 machine-specific LOTO procedures, and a maintenance job on a hydraulic press with four energy sources. Every tool on this page could hold this procedure; they differ in who can open it, how proof is kept and where the record goes.

  1. 1. The procedure

Press 4 has four energy sources: the main electrical disconnect, the pneumatic supply valve, stored hydraulic pressure in the accumulator and the raised ram (gravity). The procedure lists all four, the device for each and the order: shut down, isolate, lock and tag, release stored energy, verify zero energy.

  2. 2. Who may start it

Two maintenance technicians and a supervisor will work on the press, so it is a group lockout. Before the procedure opens, the system checks that each technician's Authorized Employee training for Press 4 is current. One technician's certificate lapsed last month, so he is swapped for a colleague whose certificate is valid.

  3. 3. Proof at the machine

Each of the four isolation points gets a lock and a photo of the lock in place: four photos. The try-start shows the press does not move, and the three people sign in order before work begins. The press now shows as locked out, with the names of the lock holders and the time.

  4. 4. The yearly inspection

Paragraph (c)(6) of 29 CFR 1910.147 asks for a periodic inspection of every procedure at least once a year. 120 procedures spread over 12 months is 120 / 12 = 10 inspections a month; at 10 a month, all 120 are covered in 12 months. Each procedure carries a review date, and the owner is alerted before it lapses.

Result: One lockout with four isolation points, four photos, three signatures and a current certification check, plus a plan of 10 procedure inspections a month that covers all 120 in a year. Choose a dedicated LOTO tool when isolations, permits and shutdowns are the whole job, and a platform tool when LOTO should sit next to skills, audits and daily issues.

Five LOTO software tools: LeanSuite first, then alphabetical

  1. 1. LeanSuite

Lean manufacturing software that runs LOTO across three modules rather than as a standalone LOTO product. Each procedure is a Lean Creator form with photo-verified isolation steps and signatures, started from a LOTO template in the Template Marketplace or built by AI from an uploaded paper or Excel procedure, with PDFs, schematics and photos embedded. A photo of each applied lock at the correct isolation point is required, and the next step stays locked until it is uploaded. The procedure opens only for someone who holds a valid Authorized Employee certification for that machine in the Skills Matrix; an expired or missing certification blocks it. Multi-person lockouts use sequential sign-offs by the lead authorized employee, the affected employee and a supervisor. A live floor map shows which machines are locked out, who holds each lock and for how long. Document Management gives each procedure an owner, a review date, version history and sign-offs, and alerts EHS before the annual review lapses. A broken isolation point is tagged in Issue Management and alerts engineering. It runs in the browser and on iOS and Android, and does not work offline. One flat price per facility with unlimited users; a 90-day pilot costs $3,000 per facility.

Best for: Plants that want each LOTO procedure to open only for a certified person, with photo proof, in the same system as their skills matrix, audits and daily issues.

    LeanSuite lockout/tagout

  2. 2. CONFORMiT

Operational risk and EHS software from a company that describes itself as a Certified B Corp, with lockout tagout next to permit to work, confined space and safe work procedure modules. Energy control procedures are kept current through approval workflows, with configurable roles and reference lists to standardize the text, and can carry P&IDs, SOPs and images. The CONFORMiT.ai mobile app takes workers through a procedure step by step, including offline, and procedures can also be viewed and printed from any browser. Mission Control tracks energy isolation in real time, with deviations analyzed and approved and dashboards on the control of work system. It syncs functional locations, assets and jobs with a CMMS, puts LOTO sheets into work orders and embeds procedures in permit to work. Procedures in Word, Excel or Access are moved over by batch import. Pricing is not published. Its security page lists ISO 27001, ISO 27017 and SOC 2 Type II, hosting on AWS by region, SSO and SCIM.

Best for: Plants with heavy maintenance and shutdown work that want LOTO sheets inside CMMS work orders and permit to work, with isolations tracked live.

    CONFORMiT website

  3. 3. Evotix

An EHS platform sold as Evotix Enterprise and Evotix Professional, with lockout/tagout among its risk management solutions next to permit to work, management of change and process safety. A worker scans a QR code on the equipment to open its procedure, follows a step-by-step mobile checklist with images, and attaches photos and comments at each step; the mobile app works offline and syncs with timestamps and user details. Procedures are templates per asset, with a register of energy sources and isolation points. Active lockouts show on a map, the system records who applied and removed locks and tags and sends reminders when work overruns, and guided steps take the asset back to service. Its EvoAI is built into its EHS workflows, and its implementation team moves paper procedures over. Pricing is on request. The pages we read do not state a security certification.

Best for: Multi-site organizations that want asset-based LOTO opened from a QR code, with offline mobile steps, inside a wider EHS suite.

    Evotix website

  4. 4. Intelex

An EHSQ suite that added a Lockout/Tagout application in its Q4 2026 launch notes, dated 7 October 2026. It governs the authoring, review, approval and upkeep of equipment-specific isolation procedures: a procedure records which kind of energy is involved, which lockout device is used and how isolation is applied, verified and removed, with several isolation points per machine and a standard list of energy sources and devices to pick from. Each procedure carries linked training verification, so you can see who is qualified to perform the isolation, and a traceable change history. The launch notes describe procedure governance; running a live lockout at the machine is not described. The suite also covers incidents, near misses, audits, contractor management and chemicals. LOTO pricing is not published; its Safety Essentials package, from $44 per user a month with 25 users minimum billed annually, does not list LOTO. Intelex lists ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification and SOC 2 and SOC 3 reports.

Best for: EHS teams already on Intelex, or choosing one EHSQ suite, that need governed LOTO procedure approval with training verification.

    Intelex website

  5. 5. Master Lock

The lock maker sells two LOTO software products. eLOTO is a cloud tool for writing and managing visual lockout procedures: a web database to create, change and print them (generated through Microsoft Word) and to track procedure and personnel audit dates and post-audit corrective actions, a Writer app that collects machine, energy source and lockout point data with photos at the equipment, and an Inspector app to audit procedures and people; both apps work offline and come from the Apple App Store and Google Play. cLOTO, its connected lockout tagout solution, digitizes the lockout itself: roles and permissions, a machine library with energy isolation points, procedures with PPE lists and QR code and photo validation, real-time dashboards of active procedures, and Manager and Worker apps, where a worker who applies a padlock during a group lockout leaves a digital record. cLOTO works with Master Lock padlocks, including a Bluetooth safety padlock. Prices are not published: eLOTO is sold through distributors and cLOTO starts with a demo request. The eLOTO page describes its database as certified ISO 27001 compliant.

Best for: Plants that buy Master Lock hardware and want procedure writing (eLOTO) or a digital record of every lock applied, including group lockouts (cLOTO).

Where LeanSuite is different

This part is about our own product, so read it as LeanSuite's pitch; the entries above describe every other tool from its own pages. Each point links to the LeanSuite page that shows it.

  • A LOTO procedure opens only for a certified person

Each procedure is linked to the certification it needs in the Skills Matrix. The form won't open unless the user holds a valid Authorized Employee certification for that machine, checked every time it opens, so an expired or missing certification blocks the lockout.

    Competency-based authorization
  • A photo of every lock, and a live map of every lockout

A photo of each applied lock at the correct isolation point is required, and the next step stays locked until it is uploaded. A live floor map shows which machines are locked out, who holds each lock and for how long.

    Photo-verified isolation
  • Improvement next to the daily work

Issues, audits, tiered meetings, skills and training sit in the same platform. A failed audit question can become a new kaizen, and when you launch a kaizen or engineering project you see who has the skills it needs. Every module is connected to every other: you enter the same information once, and the photos, documents and related work stay linked to each record.

    How the modules connect
  • A 90-day pilot at a published price

$3,000 per facility for 90 days, with the first module live in under a week. Pricing is per facility with unlimited users.

    The pilot

Where LeanSuite is not the right choice

The honest limits of our own product for this category, so you can rule it out quickly if one of these matters to you.

  • LeanSuite does not work offline. If lockouts happen in basements, tank farms or remote sites with no signal, CONFORMiT, Evotix and Master Lock's eLOTO apps work offline.
  • There is no permit to work module in LeanSuite and no CMMS link that puts LOTO sheets into work orders; CONFORMiT is built for that.
  • LeanSuite does not sell lock hardware or record padlocks electronically. Master Lock's cLOTO works with its own padlocks, including a Bluetooth safety padlock.
  • LeanSuite is not an EHS suite. If LOTO must sit with incidents, chemicals, contractors and environmental records, Evotix and Intelex cover that ground.

Which one fits

  • LOTO procedures that open only for certified people, with photo proof, next to your skills matrix, audits and daily issuesLeanSuite
  • LOTO tied to permit to work and CMMS work orders, with isolations tracked live and offline useCONFORMiT
  • Asset-based LOTO opened from a QR code inside a wider EHS suiteEvotix
  • Governed LOTO procedure approval inside an EHSQ suite you already runIntelex
  • Procedure writing, or a digital record of every padlock, alongside Master Lock hardwareMaster Lock
  • A few machines and a binderA free LOTO procedure template

Is LeanSuite right for you?

LeanSuite is likely a fit if

  • You want a LOTO procedure to open only for someone whose Authorized Employee certification for that machine is current, checked every time.
  • You want a photo of each lock at the right isolation point before the next step, and a live map of which machines are locked out.
  • LOTO should sit in the same system as your skills matrix, audits, daily issues and kaizen, at one price per facility with unlimited users.

Choose another tool if

  • CONFORMiT: LOTO must connect to permit to work, confined space and CMMS work orders, and crews need an offline app.
  • Evotix: you want LOTO opened from a QR code on each asset inside a full EHS platform.
  • Intelex: you already run Intelex and want LOTO procedures governed with review, approval and training verification.
  • Master Lock: you buy Master Lock hardware and want procedure writing or an electronic record of every padlock applied.

Retire the LOTO binder without losing the record

Try LeanSuite in your browser with sample data, or run it on your own lines for 90 days with the setup done by our team. If you are not ready for software, start with the free LOTO procedure template and poster.

What the 45-minute demo shows

For lockout/tagout, the demo opens a LOTO procedure that checks the user's certification first, then follows the photo-verified isolation steps.

Bring one process you want to fix, and how you run it today. We show the same job in LeanSuite and answer your questions.

In the demo

  1. A LOTO procedure that won't open without a valid Authorized Employee certification, a photo of each lock before the next step, and the press shown on the live map of active lockouts.
  2. A job profile with its required skills, a trainer signing off an on-the-job check, and the skill level and Job Cover Matrix updating on their own.
  3. An operator scans a QR code and adds a photo, the issue reaches its owner by rule with a due date, and a repeat issue becomes a Kaizen in one click.

Want to run LeanSuite on your own lines instead? The 90-day pilot is $3,000 per facility, set up by our team, with the first module live in under a week.

FAQ

Best LOTO Software: common questions

  1. Software that manages lockout/tagout: it keeps one approved energy control procedure per machine, with every energy source and isolation point, guides the authorized employee through shutdown, isolation, locking, release of stored energy and verification on a phone or tablet, records who applied and removed each lock with photo proof, shows which machines are locked out now, and tracks the yearly review of each procedure.

  2. It depends on where LOTO lives in your plant. For LOTO tied to permit to work and CMMS work orders, look at CONFORMiT. Inside an EHS suite, look at Evotix or Intelex. Alongside Master Lock hardware, look at Master Lock's eLOTO or cLOTO. For LOTO procedures gated by each person's certification in the same system as skills, audits and daily issues, look at LeanSuite. LeanSuite is our product. Brady LINK360 and Rockwell Automation ScanESC are also sold for LOTO; we could not read their pages on 31 October 2026.

  3. No. OSHA's standard for the control of hazardous energy, 29 CFR 1910.147, requires documented energy control procedures (with a narrow exception), training, and a periodic inspection of each procedure at least once a year, but it does not say how you keep them. Paper works if the binder at the machine is current. Software helps when procedures change often, when you need to prove who was trained and authorized, or when nobody can say which machines are locked out right now.

  4. CONFORMiT's mobile app, Evotix's mobile app and Master Lock's eLOTO Writer and Inspector apps work offline. Intelex does not describe offline use for LOTO in its launch notes. LeanSuite does not work offline.

  5. None of the LOTO products on this page publish a price. Evotix and CONFORMiT price on request, Master Lock sells eLOTO through distributors and cLOTO after a demo, and Intelex does not list LOTO in its published Safety Essentials package. LeanSuite quotes per facility with unlimited users and publishes its pilot price: 90 days for $3,000 per facility.

  6. Some can. In LeanSuite the procedure will not open unless the user holds a valid Authorized Employee certification for that machine, checked every time it opens. Master Lock's cLOTO assigns roles and permissions, CONFORMiT configures roles, and Intelex links training verification to each procedure so you can see who is qualified.

  7. Because it is our page and we would rather say so than hide it in the middle. Read it with that in mind. The other products follow in alphabetical order, each is described only from its own public pages, each entry says who it fits best, and we will correct anything a vendor or reader shows us is wrong.

  8. We read each vendor's own public pages in October 2026 and used only what they publish. Where we could not find something, the table says not published, which does not mean the product lacks it. LeanSuite is our product. If something has changed, email info@theleansuite.com and we will update the page.
