Buyer's guide

Best skills matrix software

Short answer: It depends on what the matrix has to connect to. For a dedicated skills and certification system that syncs with your HR software, look at AG5. For a matrix tied to digital work instructions, look at Azumuta, Augmentir, Poka or L2L. For a matrix inside a wider production and training platform, look at Redzone. For a matrix tied to absence cover, kaizen teams and daily shop-floor work, look at LeanSuite.

How we chose these tools

Skills matrix software shows who is qualified for which job, machine or process, and helps you close the gaps. Each product on this list meets all of these:

  • A real skills matrix

A live matrix of people against skills or jobs is a named product feature, not a spreadsheet export.

  • Built for frontline work

Made for plants and other frontline operations, where skills are tied to machines, lines and shifts.

  • Closes gaps, not just shows them

Gaps lead to training, assessments or sign-offs, so the matrix stays current.

  • Active in 2026

A live site, still sold under the name listed, with 2026 releases, news or app updates.

  • Public information

Enough on the vendor's own pages to describe what it does, how it is priced and how it handles security.

Seven skills matrix tools, in alphabetical order

  1. 1. AG5

Skills management software from Amsterdam, founded in 2005, which calls itself a skills and requirements platform for frontline enterprise. The skills matrix shows coverage by shift, department or role; required skills can be set by role, team or machine; certificates and licenses are monitored for validity and renewal; every action goes into an immutable audit log; and an AI skills merge aligns skills data. It connects to HR and learning systems such as SAP SuccessFactors, Workday, UKG, Cornerstone, Oracle and ADP, and has a frontline skills app. AG5 states ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 certification. Plans (Core, Accelerate, Enterprise) are quoted on annual contracts; single sign-on starts on Accelerate.

Best for: Companies that want a dedicated skills and certification system synced with their HR software.

    AG5 website

  2. 2. Augmentir

An AI-native connected worker platform founded in 2018. Its skills management builds a digital skills matrix that shows training completion by procedure, team or individual, delivers assessments with automatic and manual endorsements, and uses skills data to assign work; its True Performance feature assesses how proficient each worker is at each task. Its smart work instructions deliver in-line training at the point of work to close skills gaps, and run on phones, tablets, desktops and smart glasses, with an offline mode. Augmentir is SOC 2 Type 2 compliant. Pricing is by request, and single sign-on is listed as an optional add-on.

Best for: Plants that want skills, work instructions and AI-guided work assignment in one platform.

  3. 3. Azumuta

A connected worker platform for manufacturing, founded in 2016 in Ghent, Belgium. Its Skill Matrix & Training module gives a live view of every operator's skills, qualifications and training progress, builds training paths with assessments, and stores certificates with expiry dates and automatic reminders. It sits next to digital work instructions, quality checks and audits, and connects to LMS and HR systems including Moodle, Blackboard, Workday and SAP SuccessFactors; single sign-on is listed among its integrations. Pricing is quoted, on monthly or annual plans.

Best for: Plants that want the skills matrix, work instructions and quality checks from one vendor.

    Azumuta website

  4. 4. L2L

A manufacturing operations platform from Salt Lake City, active since 2010, covering production, maintenance, execution and skills. Its Connected Workforce Platform includes a dynamic skills matrix that confirms people can run a given machine or process, self assessments approved by a manager, personal skills portfolios, career development paths and digital guides. Its compliance programs are based on SOC 2 Type 2 and NIST 800-171, with single-tenant hosting on AWS or AWS GovCloud. Pricing is not published.

Best for: Plants that want the skills matrix in the same system as production and maintenance.

  5. 5. LeanSuite

Lean manufacturing software with Competency Management and a Job Cover Matrix. Each job, from operator roles to millwright or supervisor, has its own required skills and can carry qualification requirements such as required hours, and skills can be set at job level or broken down to the individual skills inside a procedure without changing the setup later. SOPs, procedures and OPLs are attached to skills and jobs and signed off digitally on a tablet, on-the-job checklists are signed by designated trainers or coordinators, and signing off the required documents and checks moves a person up the skill levels automatically. A skill level can also rise through self-assessment or an instructor-led or online course in the built-in LMS. The live, color-coded competency matrix shows strengths and critical gaps across the facility, and gaps turn into assigned training or individual development plans; users and managers can be bulk-uploaded. When someone calls out, the Job Cover Matrix filters qualified people by shift, department or proficiency, and it shows jobs only one person can do so you can cross-train first. The same skills data picks kaizen project teams, and CILR tasks can be limited to certified operators. Trainings (LMS) and audits are in the same platform. One flat price per facility with unlimited users; a 90-day pilot costs $3,000 per facility, credited to the annual plan.

Best for: Plants that want qualification by job, with document and on-the-job sign-offs, tied to absence cover, training, audits and improvement projects.

  6. 6. Poka

A connected worker platform for manufacturing, sold by IFS as IFS Connected Worker, powered by Poka. Its Skills Management module keeps a live skills matrix across every worker, line and shift, validated through scored exams, subject-matter-expert endorsements and configurable recertification policies, next to learning and development, digital work instructions, forms, issues and huddle boards. Poka is SOC 2 Type 2 compliant, hosts on AWS in the US, Canada or Germany and supports SAML 2.0 single sign-on. Pricing is not published.

Best for: Plants that want skills validated by exams and expert sign-off, next to work instructions and daily management.

    Poka website

  7. 7. Redzone

AI-native manufacturing software for frontline teams. Its Learning module includes a skills matrix dashboard showing who is qualified for each job, product and process, with warnings when a credential is nearly expired; skills are verified on the job with time-stamped digital assessments; and operators record training videos that are transcribed and translated automatically. It sits next to Redzone's productivity, compliance and reliability modules. Redzone is SOC 2 Type II certified and supports SAML 2.0 SSO. Pricing is based on sites and modules and is quoted.

Best for: Plants that want skills and training inside a full production, compliance and huddle platform.

Where LeanSuite is different

This part is about our own product, so read it as LeanSuite's pitch; the entries above describe every other tool from its own pages. Each point links to the LeanSuite page that shows it.

  • Job profiles with required skills

Each job, from operator roles to millwright or supervisor, has its own list of required skills and can carry qualification requirements, such as hours worked before someone is qualified.

    Competency Management
  • Skills at the depth your plant needs

Start with skills at job level, or break a procedure down into the separate skills inside it, without changing the setup later. Users and managers can be bulk-uploaded.

    Define competencies
  • Many routes to a skill, all tied to the LMS

A skill level can be raised through an on-the-job assessment, a self-assessment, an instructor-led or online course, or SOPs and OPLs, each tied to the person's team, their job's skill requirements and the area they work in.

    LMS for manufacturing
  • SOPs and OPLs signed off per person

SOPs, procedures and OPLs are attached to skills and jobs, and employees sign them off digitally on a tablet, so each person has an audit-ready record instead of scanned paper.

    SOPs
  • On-the-job checks signed by designated trainers

On-the-job qualification checklists can be signed off by designated trainers or coordinators, not only supervisors, so everyone is trained to the same standard.

    Cross-training
  • Levels move up on their own

Signing off the required documents and checks moves a person up the skill levels automatically, and the Job Cover Matrix then shows who is qualified to work in each area.
