Gemba walk questions poster

A gemba walk is a leader going to where the work happens to see it, ask questions and learn, not to inspect people. This poster gives nine open questions in three groups (understand the work, find the problems, support and follow up) and the rules that make a walk useful: go see, ask why, show respect, and follow up on what you agree.

The words on the poster

Gemba walk questions

Go to where the work happens. Ask, listen, learn.

  • Understand the work Can you show me how this works? What does a good day look like? How do you know you are on target?
  • Find the problems What got in your way today? What happens when something goes wrong? Where do you wait or search?
  • Support and follow up What help do you need from me? What have you tried? What did we agree last time?
  • Go see, ask why, show respect. Watch the process, not the people. Agree actions and follow up.

How to use it

  1. 1

Put it where leaders start their walk, or carry the Letter size on a clipboard.

  2. 2

Pick one group of questions per walk, not all nine.

  3. 3

Post it on the team board too, so the team knows what leaders will ask.

  4. 4

Pair it with the free gemba walk checklist and leader standard work template.

Which size to print

  • 24 x 36 in or A2: a main wall or team board, read from a few metres away.
  • 18 x 24 in or A3: a station or notice board. The A3 file also fits 11 x 17 in paper.
  • Letter or A4: a clipboard, binder or handout, on any office printer.

Every PDF is vector, so it stays sharp at full size. Nothing runs to the edge of the page, so no bleed is needed.

A poster reminds. A routine makes it stick.
