5S poster

5S is a five-step method for organizing a work area and keeping it that way: sort, set in order, shine, standardize and sustain (seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu and shitsuke). This poster gives each S in large type with what to do and one question the team can ask in its own area, for 5S boards, team areas and the start of a 5S event.

The words on the poster

5S

A workplace that shows its problems.

  • Sort (seiri) Keep what the work needs. Red-tag the rest. Is it needed here?
  • Set in order (seiton) A marked place for everything, close to where it is used. Can anyone find it fast?
  • Shine (seiso) Clean, and inspect while you clean. What did cleaning show us?
  • Standardize (seiketsu) Photo standards, labels and checklists. Would someone new know what good looks like?
  • Sustain (shitsuke) Short audits on a schedule. Act on what they find. What changed since the last audit?
  • With the team, one area at a time. 5S is done by the people who work there.

How to use it

  1. 1

Put it on the 5S board in each area, next to the photo standard and the audit scores.

  2. 2

Use the question under each S as the start of the area's 5S audit.

  3. 3

Teach it with the free 5S training deck, then do a 15-minute sort.

  4. 4

Pair it with the free 5S audit checklist and red tag log.

Which size to print

  • 24 x 36 in or A2: a main wall or team board, read from a few metres away.
  • 18 x 24 in or A3: a station or notice board. The A3 file also fits 11 x 17 in paper.
  • Letter or A4: a clipboard, binder or handout, on any office printer.

Every PDF is vector, so it stays sharp at full size. Nothing runs to the edge of the page, so no bleed is needed.

A poster reminds. A routine makes it stick.
