Lubrication basics poster: the five rights

Poor lubrication is a common cause of accelerated wear: the wrong grease, too much or too little, dirt pushed in with it, or a point simply missed. The five rights of lubrication, as taught in maintenance training, put the basics in one line: the right lubricant, in the right amount, at the right place, at the right time, by the right method. This poster gives each right in plain words and the habits that keep lubricant clean.

The words on the poster

The 5 rights of lubrication

Bearings and gearboxes live or die by their lubrication. Get these right.

  • Right lubricant The one on the point's label. Never mix types.
  • Right amount Too little wears it. Too much heats it and blows seals.
  • Right place Every point labelled and numbered on the lube chart.
  • Right time At the frequency on the lubrication schedule.
  • Right method Wipe the fitting first. Clean tools, clean hands.
  • Keep it clean: closed, labelled containers, one dispenser per lubricant, stored dry and dust-free.
  • Running machine? Only at points made for it, outside the guard. Otherwise lock out.

How to use it

Putting the Lubrication basics poster: the five rights poster to work

  1. 1

Hang it in the lube room or at the lubrication station, next to the lubrication chart.

  2. 2

Use it when you label lubrication points: each label should answer the first four rights.

  3. 3

Check the lube room against the keep-it-clean line: closed, labelled containers, one dispenser per lubricant.

  4. 4

Pair it with the free lubrication schedule template and the CILR poster.

Which size to print

  • 24 x 36 in or A2: a main wall or team board, read from a few metres away.
  • 18 x 24 in or A3: a station or notice board. The A3 file also fits 11 x 17 in paper.
  • Letter or A4: a clipboard, binder or handout, on any office printer.

Every PDF is vector, so it stays sharp at full size. Nothing runs to the edge of the page, so no bleed is needed.

A poster reminds. A routine makes it stick.
