CILR poster: clean, inspect, lubricate, re-tighten

CILR stands for clean, inspect, lubricate and re-tighten: the four routines that keep a machine in its basic condition, done by operators as part of autonomous maintenance. Much accelerated wear comes from missing one of them. This poster shows the four as a cycle with what each means, and reminds the team that every CILR task belongs on the machine's written standard and calendar, with who does it, when and how long it takes.

The words on the poster

CILR

Clean, inspect, lubricate, re-tighten. Every day, by the people who run the machine.

  • Clean Remove dirt, chips and oil so faults can be seen.
  • Inspect Levels, gauges, belts, leaks, noise, against the standard.
  • Lubricate Right lubricant, right amount, right point, right time.
  • Re-tighten Check marked bolts. Loose ones get tightened or tagged.
  • Who, what, when, how long: every CILR task is on the machine's standard and calendar.
  • CILR standard for this machine is at: ____

How to use it

Putting the CILR poster: clean, inspect, lubricate, re-tighten poster to work

  1. 1

Put it at each machine next to its CILR standard, and write where that standard is kept.

  2. 2

Use it to teach new operators what the daily machine checks are for, not just how to tick them.

  3. 3

In a standard review, check that every task on the CILR sheet sits under one of the four.

  4. 4

Pair it with the free autonomous maintenance checklist and lubrication schedule.

Which size to print

  • 24 x 36 in or A2: a main wall or team board, read from a few metres away.
  • 18 x 24 in or A3: a station or notice board. The A3 file also fits 11 x 17 in paper.
  • Letter or A4: a clipboard, binder or handout, on any office printer.

Every PDF is vector, so it stays sharp at full size. Nothing runs to the edge of the page, so no bleed is needed.
